Working together from 1911 onwards, they became known as “Die Sacharoffs” after their marriage in 1919.

I always find late works particularly interesting:
they are often difficult to understand – see Faust II – as they are full of cross-references, flooded with decades of thought and searching, overloaded with all the knowledge accumulated over a lifetime. Sometimes, however, the essence, the condensed essence of a life, crystallises in such a late work.

In the case of The Sacharoffs, I feel exactly that: condensed into an explosion of expression.

The choreography “Bourrée Fantasque” from 1952, sketched by Alexander Sacharoff two years before his death, shows a short, wild, whirling dance that opened up to me like a liberation, and which I translated into my own formal language and performed in 2006 with 24ct gold leaf on steel.

I renamed it “Bourrée Sorcière” to clearly associate it with the free, wild, life-loving and lustful woman.

Even today, in the 21st century, women who are bursting with joie de vivre and energy, who express their joy openly, are all too often labelled “witches”.
The denial of the seething juices of life, the condemnation of a delicious, free sexuality, but above all of a woman's independence, is still omnipresent. Subordination, conformity, “modest” behaviour continue to be regarded as pleasant and desirable, and are often vehemently demanded by society. Women who radiate strength and joie de vivre without restraint, or who are simply unable to hide it, are often considered dangerous, unpleasant, even annoying. It is ridiculous what forms this can take. Because ultimately, it is oppression that is dangerous.

The “Bourrée Sorcière” is a dance of liberation.

Since the word “witch” is a later coinage, I have named the figures, which I burned out of the matrix and gilded the edges of, after the old word used for wild, wise women: fence riders.

This old expression comes from the medieval idea that disobedient (...) women would ride on fences. Everyone can think for themselves why this strange image became established in society.

The notes, applied with 24-carat gold leaf, represent the original score of the melody chosen by the Sacharoffs. One could therefore dance to this work with the original music. Ultimately, it is a synaesthetic and multimedia work, very much in the spirit of the artist group “Der Blaue Reiter”, which regarded all art forms as equal.

Since The Fence Riders were to be installed as a trellis with a distance of about one metre between them, they can produce sounds themselves when the wind blows, which can manifest themselves in a wild dance choreography.

Bourrée Sorcière und Zaunreiterinnen

Ein Spätwerk ist für mich stets in besonderem Maße interessant:
oft ist es schwer verständlich - siehe Faust II -, da voller Querverweise, geflutet von Dekaden des Denkens und Suchens, überladen von allem angesammelten Wissen. Zuweilen jedoch kristallisiert sich die Essenz, das auf das Wesentliche eingedickte Kondensat eines Lebens in solch einem Spätwerk.

Im Falle der Sacharoffs empfinde ich es genau so: kondensiert auf die Explosion des Ausdrucks.

Die Choreographie 'Bourrée Fantasque' aus dem Jahre 1952, skizziert von Alexander Sacharoff zwei Jahre vor seinem Tod, zeigt einen kurzen, wilden, wirbelnden Tanz, der sich mir wie eine Befreiung eröffnete, und den ich, in meine eigene Formsprache übersetzt, 2006 mit 24ct Blattgold auf Stahl durchgeführt habe.

Ich habe sie umbenannt, um sie mit 'Bourrée Sorcière' ganz klar der freien, wilden, lebens- und lustvollen Frau zuzuordnen.

Selbst heute, im 21. Jahrhundert, werden Frauen, die von Lebenslust und Kraft strotzen, die Freude im Ausdruck haben, nur allzuoft als 'Hexen' bezeichnet.
Die Verleugnung der brodelnden Lebenssäfte, die Verdammung einer köstlichen, freien Sexualität, vor allem aber der Eigenwilligkeit einer Frau, ist noch immer omnipräsent. Unterordnung, Anpassung, 'züchtiges' Verhalten, werden weiterhin als angenehm und erstrebenswert erachtet, und oft genug vehement seitens der Gesellschaft eingefordert. Frauen, die Kraft und Lebeslust unverstellt ausstrahlen, oder diese schlicht nicht zu verbergen vermögen, gelten oft als gefährlich, unangenehm, sogar lästig. Es ist lächerlich, welche Formen das annehmen kann. Denn letztendlich ist es die Unterdrückung, die gefährlich ist.

Die 'Bourrée Sorcière' ist ein Befreiungstanz.

Da das Wort 'Hexe' eine Wortschöpfung späterer Zeit ist, habe ich die Figuren, die ich aus der Matrix ausgebrannt und deren Rand ich blattvergoldet habe, nach dem alten Wort, das für die wilden, weisen Frauen benutzt wurde, benannt: Zaunreiterinnen.
Dieser alte Ausdruck kommt aus der mittelalterlichen Vorstellung, ungehorsame (…) Frauen würden auf Zäunen reiten. Möge sich jede(r) selbst Gedanken darüber machen, warum sich dieses seltsame Bild in der Gesellschaft festsetzte.

Die Noten, die mit 24ct Blattgold aufgetragen sind, stellen die Originalpartitur der von den Sacharoffs gewählten Melodie dar. Man könnte diese Arbeit also mit der Ursprungsmusik nachtanzen. Ein letztlich synästhetisches und multimediales Werk, ganz im Sinne der Künstlergruppe 'Der Blaue Reiter', die alle Kunstformen als gleichberechtigt ansah.

Da Die Zaunreiterinnen als Spalier mit etwa einem Meter Abstand installiert werden sollten, können sie bei Wind selbst Klänge erzeugen, die sich in einer wilden Tanzchoreographie manifestieren dürfen.

Sie können die 'Bourrée Sorcière’ im Jazzclub Schlot in den Edisonhöfen in Berlin-Mitte sehen, wo sie als Leihgabe ausgestellt ist.
